Active and Passive

What are we learning today?

You will use the present simple and the past simple. You will also learn a simple passive sentence.

Explanation

• Present simple tells facts and habits: In November the sun goes down.
• Past simple tells finished events: My parents stayed in the hotel.
• The passive is be + past participle: is closed, was closed.
• In the passive, the action is more important than the doer.
• Use "by" only for the doer.
• Negative: isn't closed, wasn't closed.

Examples

1. They close a part of the reserve. (active)
2. A part of the reserve is closed. (passive)
3. Children are taught by their parents.

Remember!

• Do not forget "is", "are", "was" or "were" in the passive.
• Use "by" before the doer.
