Fact or Opinion?

What are we learning today?

You will find the author's opinion in a short text. You will tell a fact from an opinion.

Explanation

• A fact can be checked. An opinion shows what somebody thinks.
• Look for opinion adjectives: unlucky, dangerous, beautiful.
• Look for verbs like "hope".
• Look for quotations. A quotation shows the view of a person, not always the author.
• Look for words that recommend something, like "healthier".

Examples

1. Mick is a very unlucky man. This is an opinion.
2. Mick spent six months in hospital in 2010. This is a fact.
3. The film was brilliant. The word "brilliant" shows an opinion.

Remember!

• Not every sentence in a text is a fact.
• Look at the adjectives.
