Scanning a Text for Facts

You will learn how to find one fact in a short text without reading everything.

Explanation

Scanning means looking for one fact quickly.

• Read the question and find the key words.
• Run your eyes over the text. Look for names, numbers and capital letters.
• Read that sentence carefully and answer.
• Question words help you. "How many" needs a number. "When" needs a time.

Examples

1. Where is Laura working in Goa? – In an orphanage.
2. When did she arrive? – Two weeks ago.
3. How many islands does the marine park have? – 42.

Remember!

• Do not read the whole text again for every question.
• Check the text. Do not answer from memory.
• Write a short answer.
