Understanding Long Conversations

What are we learning today?

You will learn a plan for listening to a long conversation.

Explanation

• Before you listen, look at the photos and read the questions. Guess the words you will hear.
• First listening: find the gist. The gist is the general idea. Ask: Who speaks? Where are they? What is the topic?
• Second listening: listen for details and choose the answers.
• After listening, compare your answers with a partner.
• Listen for words that show agreement or disagreement, such as "Absolutely!" and "I disagree."

Examples

1. Look at the photos and guess the words: camping, tour guide, trip.
2. Listen again and choose the correct answer: a, b or c.
3. First I note who speaks. Then I listen for the numbers.

• You do not need to understand every word the first time.
• Read the questions before you listen.
