Finding the Main Point

What are we learning today?

You will read a short text and find what it is mostly about.

Explanation

• The main point is what the whole text is about.
• Read the title first. Then read the first and last lines.
• Look at headings and questions too.
• Ask: What is this text mostly about?
• A small fact is a detail. It is not the main point.

Examples

1. A text about Tatyana McFadden: she races in a wheelchair and is a Paralympic champion.
2. A text about the Highland Games: traditional Scottish sports, dance and food.
3. A text about Kazakhstan: its athletes, especially boxers, are famous.

Remember!

• Use the title and the first lines to find the main point.
• Do not choose a detail as the main point.
