Facts That Prove an Idea

What are we learning today?

You will learn to find evidence. Evidence is a fact that supports a statement.

Explanation

• A statement says something is true.
• Evidence is a fact or a number that shows it is true.
• An opinion is not evidence.
• Words that bring in evidence are: because, so, for example and in fact.
• Ask yourself: What fact proves this?

Examples

1. Statement: Diwali is a big festival. Evidence: It lasts five days.
2. Statement: Diwali is international. Evidence: Other countries, for example Nepal and Sri Lanka, also celebrate it.
3. Statement: Batyrkhan helped children. Evidence: He was a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.

Remember!

• Evidence is a fact, not an opinion.
• The fact must match the statement.

Check yourself

1. Which word can link a fact to a result: "so" or "or"?
2. Give evidence that Diwali is international.
