The Author's Opinion

What are we learning today?

You will find what the author thinks in a short text.

Explanation

• An opinion is what the writer thinks. A fact can be checked.
• Clue words are favourite, best, very, dangerous and wonderful. "I think" and "in my opinion" are clues, too.
• Ask: could somebody disagree? If yes, it is probably an opinion.
• Words like big and long give facts, not opinions.

Examples

1. Opinion: Hippos are very dangerous.
2. Fact: The Inuit live in Alaska, Canada and Greenland.
3. Opinion: The husky is the Inuit's favourite helper.

Remember!

• Look for words that judge.
• Find the author's opinion, not your own.
