Understanding New Words

What are we learning today?

You will find the main idea of a short text, even when some words are new.

Explanation

You do not need to know every word. Use the context.

1. Read the whole sentence.
2. Look at the words near the new word.
3. Guess the meaning.
4. Check that your guess fits the main idea of the text. Pictures and the title can help too.

Examples

1. It is hot in the summer. They use irrigation systems to grow crops. Irrigation brings water to plants.
2. Date palms grow near oases. An oasis is a place in the desert where plants can grow.
3. A picture of a flag helps you think about a country.

Remember!

• You do not need every word to find the main idea.
• Do not stop when you meet a new word.
• Use the words around it.
