You will learn how to find the main idea of a longer text.

Explanation

• The main idea is often in the title, the first sentence and the last sentence.
• Details give examples.
• To test a detail, take it out. The main idea does not change.
• Do not take the first detail as the main idea.

Examples

1. A text about strange hotels in nature: the main idea is strange hotels and what guests liked.
2. John's blog: life in his town is difficult, but he loves it.
3. "137 species of plants" is a detail.

Remember!

• Do not make the main idea too narrow.
• Do not just repeat the title.
