Fiction and Non-fiction

What are we learning today?

You will tell the difference between fiction and non-fiction. You will know how to read each one.

Explanation

• Fiction is invented. Stories and novels are fiction.
• Non-fiction gives facts. Biographies and articles are non-fiction.
• A story has a narrator, characters, a place and feelings.
• A biography has dates, places and facts. It uses he or she and the past simple.
• Read a text quickly the first time. Do not stop. Then read it again for details.

Examples

1. A fairy tale is fiction.
2. A school timetable is non-fiction.
3. "Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859." This sentence is from a biography.

• In fiction, look at the feelings.
• In non-fiction, look at the facts and dates.
