Конспект

What are we learning today?

You will learn how to find the parts of an argument in a text.

Explanation

  • An argument has three parts: opinion, reason and example.
  • Look for the words "because", "so" and "but".
  • "Because" introduces a reason.
  • "But" shows a different view.
  • Ask: What does the writer think? Why? Which examples help?

Examples

  1. Gareth writes: "Our school is great because we've got lots of different clubs."
  2. There's a guitar club on Thursdays. This is an example.
  3. Gareth writes: "Lots of Welsh people love rugby but I think it's boring!"

Remember!

  • Do not take an example for a reason.
  • Always give a reason after your opinion.

Check yourself

  1. Which word introduces a reason?
  2. Why does Gareth say his school is great?
