Using Notes and Dictionaries

What are we learning today?

You will learn how to check the meaning of new words. You will use notes, context and a dictionary.

Explanation

• A star (*) marks a word with a short note at the bottom of the text. Read the note first.
• Then use the context. "Badly cropped" means the hair is cut short.
• Then use a dictionary, paper or online. Look for the base form: "slapping" becomes "slap". Choose the meaning that fits.
• Write the word, its meaning and your own sentence.
• Look up only the words that stop you from understanding.

1. cropped - cut very short - His hair was cropped.
2. tremble (verb) - to shake a little.

• Do not look up every word.
