Конспект

What are we learning today?

You will learn to tell a fact from an opinion. You will use a biography and the words of story people.

Explanation

  • A fact can be checked. "George Eliot died in 1880" is a fact.
  • "She wrote seven novels" is a fact too.
  • An opinion shows what someone thinks. "She's a naughty child" is an opinion.
  • Signal words for opinions: I think, should, weird, naughty, terrible.
  • In a story, a character's opinion can be wrong.

Examples

  1. She grew up in the countryside. This is a fact.
  2. I think the girl has too much hair. This is an opinion.
  3. Maggie cut her hair. This is a fact in the story. "It was a stupid idea" is an opinion.

Remember!

  • Facts can be checked. Opinions are what people think.

Check yourself

  1. Fact or opinion: "Maggie looks weird."?
  2. Fact or opinion: "She wrote seven novels."?
  3. Which word shows an opinion: "should" or "1860"?
