What are we learning today?
You will learn to use capital letters and punctuation marks in your writing.
Explanation
- Use a capital letter at the start of a sentence and for names and places.
- A full stop (.) ends a statement.
- A comma (,) goes between things in a list.
- An apostrophe (') is used in short forms like it's and we've, and to show who owns something, like Dad's friend.
- A question mark (?) ends a question.
- An exclamation mark (!) shows strong feeling.
Examples
- Tavistock is a small town in Devon.
- There are lots of shops, parks and sports facilities, too.
- What's your favourite place in town?
- See you in May!
Remember!
- Start with a capital letter. End with a mark.
- Write it's for "it is", not its.
Check yourself
- Add punctuation: "my town is small"
- Where does the comma go: "shops parks and cafes"?
- Write correctly: "its a big city"
