Guessing Words from Context

What are we learning today?

You will learn to understand a new word when you do not know it.

Explanation

• Do not stop at a new word. Look for clues.
• Clue 1: Look at the words around it. "The forests are home to lots of wildlife, including tigers." Wildlife means wild animals, birds and plants.
• Clue 2: Look at the parts of the word. Firewood is fire plus wood. It is wood for a fire.
• Clue 3: Look for brackets. In "raw (uncooked) meat", the brackets explain "raw".

1. A charity worker is a person who works for a charity.
2. A fishing boat is a boat for fishing.
3. Raw meat is uncooked meat.
