Spelling Past Participles

What are we learning today?

You will learn to spell regular past participles and some hard words.

Explanation

• Add -ed: crash, crashed.
• If the verb ends in -e, add -d: love, loved.
• If a verb ends in consonant plus -y, change y to i and add -ed: carry, carried.
• If a short verb ends in consonant, vowel, consonant, double the last letter: slip, slipped.
• Irregular verbs change in other ways: fall, fallen. Break, broken. Cut, cut.
• Some letters are silent: the k in knee and the w in wrist.
• Look, cover, write, check.

Examples

1. drop - dropped
2. tidy - tidied
3. stop - stopped

Remember!

• Do not add -ed to irregular verbs.
• Write "slipped", not "sliped".
