Text Types and Their Features

What are we learning today?

You will learn how to recognise different types of text. You will see how each type looks and sounds.

Explanation

Each type of text has its own form.

• An online forum has user names, times and short, friendly replies.
• A magazine article has a title and an introduction.
• An email has a greeting and a closing. The prefix "re-" means "do again". The words "who", "which", "where" and "whose" join sentences.

Examples

1. Forum: "Hi everyone, I'm thinking of taking a holiday in Thailand. Have you got any tips?"
2. Article introduction: "This week, eighteen-year-old Laura Byrne tells us about her year out."
3. Email: "Dear Granny, ... Best wishes, Tom"
4. re- + build = rebuild

• Think about who writes to whom.
• Do not write a forum reply like a formal letter.
