Verb + Infinitive or -ing

What are we learning today?

You will learn which verbs take to + verb and which take the -ing form.

Explanation

• Some verbs take to + verb: want, would like, need, plan, hope, decide, learn.
• Some verbs take the -ing form: enjoy, like, love, hate, finish, stop.
• Like and love can take both forms.
• After would like, use only to + verb.

Examples

1. I want to be a pilot.
2. I quite enjoy studying at home.
3. I decided to learn English. I finished doing my homework.

Remember!

• Say "I would like to go", not "I would like going".
• Enjoy and finish are followed by -ing.
