Active and passive sentences

What are we learning today?

You will learn to use the present simple and the past simple. You will also learn a simple passive sentence.

Explanation

• Use the present simple for facts and habits: "The Dubai Mall has about 1,200 shops."
• Use the past simple for a finished action: "We went there today."
• The present passive is: is / are + past participle.
• Use the passive when the action is more important than the person who does it.
• Add "by ..." only when the person is important.
• Negative: "That old building isn't used now."
• Question: "Where are toothbrushes sold?"
• Some past participles: eat - eaten, speak - spoken, play - played.

Examples

1. Football is played all over the world.
2. Coats and gloves aren't worn in the summer.
3. Tickets are sold in the post office.

Remember!

• Passive = is / are + past participle.
• Use "is" with one thing and "are" with many things.
