Understanding an Argument

What are we learning today?

You will find the parts of an argument in a text. You will see why family is important.

Explanation

• An argument has a claim, reasons and examples.
• The claim is the main point.
• A reason says why the claim is true.
• An example shows the reason in real life.
• Claim: Diwali is a family festival.
• Reasons: families clean houses, wear colourful clothes and eat special meals together.

Examples

1. Family is always important to Hindus, but during Diwali it's even more important.
2. People celebrate with their families at home and they eat special meals.
3. Claim: family is important. Reason: it helps you. Example: we eat dinner together.

Remember!

• "Because" often shows a reason.
• An example is a fact or a situation that shows the reason.
