Using a Dictionary

What are we learning today?

You will use a dictionary and word lists to check a word.

Explanation

• A dictionary shows meaning, spelling and stress.
• A picture word bank shows words like airport, coach, ferry and helicopter.
• Add -ist to some words to name a person: cycle, cyclist.
• Stress shows which part of the word is strong, for example AIRport. The word helicopter has four syllables.
• Write down the spelling, the stress, the meaning and a sentence.

Examples

1. cycle - cyclist
2. ferry (noun) - a boat that carries people and cars.

Remember!

• Check a new word in a dictionary.
• Spell cyclist with y, not with i.
