Punctuation in Writing

What are we learning today?

You will learn to use punctuation in dialogues and emails.

Explanation

• Put the spoken words in quotation marks.
• Use a comma before or after the quote and a speech verb.
• A question mark or an exclamation mark stays inside the quotes.
• A new speaker starts a new line.
• In an email, put a comma after the greeting and after the closing.
• Use an apostrophe in words like it's, don't and you'll.

Examples

1. 'What are they for?' said Tom.
2. 'Where is the library?' asked Anna.
3. Hi Annie, Great to hear from you!

Remember!

• After a statement, use a comma before "said": 'Come here,' said Tom.
• Do not forget quotation marks.
