What are we learning today?
You will learn which verbs take "to + verb" and which verbs take a verb with -ing.
Explanation
- After want, would like and would prefer, use to + base verb.
- "I'd like to ride my bike."
- "I'd prefer to see the castle."
- Would like is more polite than want.
- After enjoy, finish and don't mind, use a verb with -ing.
- "I really enjoy cooking."
- Negative: "I don't want to go." or "I wouldn't like to go."
Examples
- Would you like to look round the cathedral?
- She'd like to see the new shopping centre.
- My brother doesn't want to go to the theme park.
Remember!
- Say "I would like to go", not "I would like going".
- Say "I enjoy reading", not "I enjoy to read".
Check yourself
- Choose: "I'd like ___ the museum." (visiting / to visit)
- Make a question: you / would like / go / cinema
