Punctuation in Writing

What are we learning today?

You will use capital letters, full stops, question marks, commas and apostrophes in a letter or a blog.

Explanation

• Use a capital letter at the start of a sentence, and for names and places.
• End a sentence with a full stop (.). End a question with a question mark (?). Use an exclamation mark (!) for strong feelings.
• Use a comma in a list, after a greeting, and before "but".
• Use an apostrophe (') in short forms and for possession.

Examples

1. Hi Jon, I'm writing this at lunchtime.
2. I have a pen, a book and a ruler.
3. Mum has lunch at home, but I'm at school.
4. This is my brother's laptop.

Remember!

• "It's" means "it is".
• Do not put commas between every two words.
