What are we learning today?
You will learn how to spell some tricky words about shops and places.
Explanation
- Shops: bookshop, chemist, newsagent, supermarket.
- Places: neighbour, cathedral, library, monument, theatre.
- The prefix "un-" goes before a word. The word does not change. For example, un + usual = unusual.
- The sound /f/ can be written f, ff, ph or gh: coffee, elephant, enough.
- The word "of" is a trap. It is written with f, but it has the sound /v/.
- Break a long word into syllables: neigh-bour.
Examples
- un + happy = unhappy
- phone, laugh, off
- neigh-bour
Remember!
- Write "library" and "neighbour" with all their letters.
- Look, cover, write and check.
Check yourself
- Add "un-" to "tidy".
- Which letters make the /f/ sound in "enough"?
